Many places all around Spain celebrated the Bicentenary of the Spanish Independence War from the year 2008 to the year 2014. During this war, Tordesillas was the headquaters for the French Army in Castile and Leon. Tordesillas also took part in war development, mainly in the English campaign in 1812.
In this town, a lot of historical events occurred, such as Napoleon Bonaparte’s visit in 1808 and his interview with the abbess of the Royal Monastery of Santa Clara.
Tordesillas was the focus of the history again in 1812. During this year some important events took place in Tordesillas that changed war guidelines: the siege of Tordesillas by the Spanish troops, the surrender of French troops in St. Antolin church the 4th of August, the Cadiz Constitution oath on the 20th of September, and the explosion of the hermitage of La Peña and the sixth span of the bridge.
Two thousand years later, we remind and introduce visitors the important historical events that took place here. This initiative was organized by the tourism department of the town council, in collaboration with the local development group “Zona Centro”, thanks to the development program “LEADERCAL”.
